Kathleen was born in a military hospital on Guam in 1984. She was raised in Lubbock, Texas. She earned an MFA from the Ohio State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is the author of the memoir Loose of Earth, forthcoming from the University of Texas Press in April 2024

Her writing has appeared in Belt, Guernica, Gulf Coast, Iron Horse Literary Review, River Teeth, and elsewhere. She teaches creative nonfiction workshops, often with a focus on environmental writing, at the University of Chicago.

She is married to the writer Michael William Palmer. Together they have a son and a few unruly pets.
